The Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education of students at Sandy Secondary School is of great importance. This is evident through our emphasis on SMSC in all lesson observations, two tutor sessions focusing on SMSC per week, and regular speakers and drop-down days for pupils to enhance their education. We also ensure that the SMSC programme is in line with the PSHE association guidelines and meets all of the statutory requirements. Pupils at Sandy Secondary School benefit greatly from our SMSC programme. This is visible through their positive attitudes, ability to express themselves in an articulate manner, the volume of their achievements and their involvement in our school community.

All members of the school community are expected to promote British Values and SMSC. This helps us to ensure that pupils have an enhanced knowledge of personal development, understanding of a variety of race, cultures and opinions and equips them for life beyond our school doors. At this school we have fantastic results, aspirational targets, an effective behaviour policy and a desire to better the life chances of every pupil who enters the school building. SMSC and British Values support all of these aims; in encouraging confidence, developing character, responsibility and helping our pupils to contribute to the wider community.

Students learn about:

  • Identity, diversity and human rights. They consider how the rights of people are sacrificed through discrimination and bullying on a local, national and global scale.
  • The importance of democracy, focusing on local, national and world events. Students may write and distribute questionnaires to find out what needs changing in the local community as part of developing campaign skills through active citizenship.
  • Debating issues relevant to the current news. They will learn and develop their speaking skills through identifying the needs, beliefs and opinions of others, as well as their own.
  • How the media influences the beliefs that people hold and what impact this has on society.
  • Their role within society by examining rights and responsibilities of citizens through topics such as crime and justice, political participation and the economy.
